Lot 5287 - Ultimate Personal Box

Phase: 38

Last Bid Date: 11/10/2018

Est. Value: $300

Winning bid: $245

Ultimate Personal Box by Randall Gatewood

Designer/Maker: Randall Gatewood

Size: 23x12x9cm

Notes: This is a 3-digit cryptex box. The box can be opened using a preset combination or using a "trick opening box" method. This appears to be a prototype for a second edition (not part of the original batch of 20 from 2005), and is different in woods and decorations from the first batch (sides are laser etched without inlays). The mechanism is very finicky, and typically requires nudging or retry for virtually every operation. Thus, without knowing the solution or combination, success is very unlikely. I have been able to open the box using the combination, but not using the trick method, nor have I been able to reset the combination. Includes scan of information/solution pamphlet for original production. The instructions for the trick method are slightly obfuscated (on purpose), and the instructions for resetting the combination appear to have notation inconsistencies or errors.

Ultimate Personal Box by Randall Gatewood

Designer/Maker: Randall Gatewood

Size: 23x12x9cm

Notes: This is a 3-digit cryptex box. The box can be opened using a preset combination or using a "trick opening box" method. This appears to be a prototype for a second edition (not part of the original batch of 20 from 2005), and is different in woods and decorations from the first batch (the sliders are inlaid, but the sides are laser etched without inlays). The mechanism is very finicky, and typically requires nudging or retry for virtually every operation. Thus, without knowing the solution or combination, success is very unlikely. I have been able to open the box using the combination, but not using the trick method, nor have I been able to reset the combination. One slider is slightly warped and doesn't move freely without nudging. Includes scan of information/solution pamphlet for original production. The instructions for the trick method are slightly obfuscated (on purpose), and the instructions for resetting the combination appear to have notation inconsistencies or errors.
